About vGreens

vGreens is dedicated to the resource-efficient, data-driven production of nutrient-rich foods through vertical farming. Our software solution enables year-round fruit production, irrespective of climate or season. With our inaugural farm, we can cultivate strawberries - as a blueprint for other fruits and vegetables in the future - near urban centers throughout the year, utilizing 99% less farmland, 95% less water, and 95% less fertilizer compared to traditional agriculture. At the core of our technology is a continuously optimizing AI algorithm.

How it all began

The idea for vGreens was born back in 2020 – since then, we've been on an extraordinary journey. We are incredibly proud of the milestones we have been able to achieve in recent years and look forward to the continuing adventure!

January 2020: The Idea

At the beginning of 2020, the vision of data-driven 365-day production of strawberries using vertical farming and AI software germinates. The journey of the future founding team of vGreens – including Claas Ahrend, Dr. Stefan Hey, Dr. Maximilian Hartmann and Assist. Prof. Dr. Krampe – takes off with initial technical tests.

April 2022:
Foundation & first Vertical Farm

Two years of intensive development later: the startup vGreens is officially founded in summer 2022. At the same time, the founding team set up its first automated pilot farm in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Over 4 tons of strawberries are produced here annually on an area of 50 m2.

December 2022: Pre-Seed-Funding

vGreens closes its first successful funding round. A pre-seed-funding of EUR 1 million is followed by an extended round of EUR 500,000 in December 2023.

December 2023:
New Headquarter in Essen, Germany

vGreens moves to the center of the Ruhr region in Germany: Essen. The startup’s new headquarters are located at the Triple Z startup and business center at Zeche Zollverein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

February 2024:
Establishment of an advisory board

In spring 2024, an Advisory Board is established at vGreens, whose members include Guido Kerkhoff (CEO of Klöckner & Co. SE), Prof. Dr. Niko Mohr (Expert Partner McKinsey & Company), Matthias Helfrich (Business Angel of the Year 2021), Jan-Yves Clames (Executive Director Siemens Financial Services), Carsten Puschmann (CEO Scale Now GmbH) and Dr. Lysander Heigl (Partner Frankus).

July 2024: First industrial module &
expansion to Singapore

In collaboration with technical partners, vGreens builds the first industrial module of a vertical farm in Essen, Germany, which enables software-controlled strawberry production. At the same time, vGreens expands to Singapore with a subsidiary.

Stay tuned –
much more to come soon!
